DFA1979

The night before Lollapalooza 2011 (Thursday, 8/4) kicked off, Death From Above 1979 played an exceptionally intimate and sold out show at Metro. I started to get into the duo around 2006 (aka when they broke up), and never really thought I’d get to see them live. Metro was the perfect setting, both sonically and vibe-wise for the performance.

The Toronto-based band Metz opened the show and took to the stage at roughly 9:00PM. They proceeded to deliver a set of droned-out, noisy punk rock. Drummer Hayden Menzies guided the trio through interleaved passages of mathy time changes, while guitarist/vocalist Alex Edkins and bassist Chris Slorach strummed furiously away on their respective instruments. Edkins’ vocal style consisted of an interesting cross between scream-singing, and a more even tempered low hum. The band played through much of what they stated was a forthcoming (untitled) album, which you can now sample via their Bandcamp.

After a long set-changeover, Death From Above 1979 were warmly greeted by the wild crowd (wild, but not as wild as their comeback performance-fiasco at SXSW this year). DFA played through almost all of their critically acclaimed LP You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, its predecessor the Heads Up EP, and some b-sides.
