Lykke Li & Grimes played Metro (LL pics)

words by Claire O’Connor, photos by Josh Darr

Canadian artist, Grimes opened the stage at Metro on May 23rd with more sound than I’ve seen one person make. The sold out crowd warmly welcomed the newcomer, making her Chicago debut. With gauzy layers of synths that embeded themselves into post-punk like rhythms, artists like Kathleen Hanna and Cocorosie came to mind once sound maker Claire Boucher sang through her oftentimes-handheld mic. Songs off of her new album Halfaxa won the audience over and left them asking for more.

Surrounded by fog, soft lights and rushing strobes; Lykke Li danced across the stage to a sold out crowd. Concertgoers were treated to new material off of Wounded Rhymes while old songs like “Little Bit”, “Dance Dance Dance”, and “Possibility” took on a stark, scintillating vibe to blend into a sonically cohesive live show.

Draped in her signature black ensemble (sans necklace noisemakers), Li’s romantically revengeful songs spoke for themselves. Minimal on the dance moves, her band quieted the venue with rich harmonies on “My Love is Unrequited.” Kanye West‘s “Power” shook in the heads of many as Li and co. broke into a tribal-like jam in between “Youth Knows No Pain” while a stripped cover of The Big Pink‘s “Velvet” drew loud cheers. More recent tracks like “Get Some” and “I Follow Rivers” were crowd favorites.
