The Black Angels played Lincoln Hall (pics, setlist)

words & photos by Zach Pollack

Accompanied by The Beach Boys‘ “Good Vibrations” blaring though the house speakers, The Black Angels took the stage at 9:30PM. Starting things off with their aptly titled “Bad Vibrations”, the Austin-based band leapt into their set. Although Phosphene Dream was released over a year ago, it’s a record that’s since been on constant rotation for me. These songs just never feel worn out, and it’s apparent that the sold out Lincoln Hall crowd feels the same. With ominous low lighting, and constant strobe flashes the stage was lit perfectly to complement their music. They even stepped as far back as their debut LP Passover to play tracks like “Prodigal”, and “Black Grease”. Late into their 90 minute set, they pulled out an extended jam version of the two minute track “Telephone”. Interlaced in the jam were various solo sections, separately highlighting each member of the band; as well as bits and pieces of The Beatles‘ “Come Together”. The Black Angels truly held their own against the masses of eager fans.
