The Lawrence Arms playing January shows; Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds streaming new EP
by Andrew Sacher
The Lawrence Arms at Riot Fest 2010 (more by Katie Hovland)
Melodic punks The Lawrence Arms haven’t been up to too much lately, but they’ll be going on a short run of dates in the beginning of 2012, with The Holy Mess and Lord, kicking off with a hometown show on January 7 at Metro. Tickets for the show are on sale.
Frontman Brendan Kelly spoke to Punknews about the shows:
In 2011, [we] only played two shows, once with the mighty Dead Milkmen and once out in SF for the Asian Man spectacular. It was, all things considered, a pretty slow year. Now, in the opening moments of 2012, in honor of the apocalypse, we’re gonna go ahead and straight up DOUBLE our entire last year’s worth of playing out in January alone. That’s right! We were talking and we realized that we haven’t played Detroit since the day Oh! Calcutta! came out (which was 2006, for fucks sake!) We haven’t played Cleveland or St. Louis since the fall of that same year, and we couldn’t very well play around the midwest without doing a hometown show
Speaking of Brendan Kelly, his group Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds put out their first release, the A Man With The Passion of Tennessee Williams EP, this week (12/27) and you can stream the entire thing at the band’s Punk News profile. The title track and the acoustic track, “Suffer the Children Come Unto Me,” have a more stripped down rock feel with the leftover punk energy similarly honed by Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music on his solo material. But the EP’s second track, “I’d Rather Die Than Live Forever,” is a quick punk blast that could pass for an early Lawrence Arms demo.
