Animal Collective & Ratking @ Concord Music Hall (pics)
photos by Angelo Fiore, words by Calley Nelson
Baltimore psychedelic-pop staples Animal Collective played a sold-out show at Chicago's Concord Music Hall last Saturday night (2/27), touting jams from Painting With, the band's twelfth album, on top of a slew of deep cuts. With blown out, cartoony sculptures, fog machines, and claymation installations, the trio incorporated the abstract, nihilistic echoes initially seeded in "Floridada" (Painting With's poppy single) into their touring set, blurring a prolific art movement into contemporary electronic music. The set lacked fan favorites like "My Girls", "Brothersport" and "Peacebone" but was rich with rarities like "Bees" from their 2005 album Feels, incorporating a claymation queen bee and her hive.
