The setting was solemn, even breathtaking — the high ceiling and stained glass windows of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the University of Chicago campus. But the performers couldn’t have been more casual, even downright shaggy. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile looked like twins, so much so that it was difficult to tell sometimes where one tousled head of hair or guitar part ended and the other began.

The duo’s recent album, “Lotta Sea Lice,” is an utterly charming and at times galvanizing collaboration notable for the understated ease of the conversation between their voices and guitars. That dialogue was abetted by a fine but somewhat superfluous backing band at Rockefeller Chapel that included Sleater-Kinney’s brilliant drummer, Janet Weiss.

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile are currently on tour in support of their collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice, and they just wrapped up a three-night stay in Chicago that began on Thursday (10/26) at the gorgeous Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. Backed by The Sea Lice (featuring Sleater-Kinney's Janet Weiss and Katie Harkin), they played a mix of songs from their album, individual solo favorites and a few covers, including one song by tourmate Jen Cloher (which is on the album).
